Paralysis ticks in dogs: searching, signs and when to act

Paralysis ticks are concentrated along the coastal region of eastern Australia. Location matters, but it should not be reduced to a simple distance rule. A boundary such as “within 20 km of the coast” is not a reliable line between risk and safety.

During paralysis-tick season, the practical routine is simple: use appropriate prevention and still search your dog every day. The head deserves particular attention, but the search needs to cover the whole animal.

Veterinary attention

If compatible signs are present, contact a vet promptly

Weakness or wobbliness, especially in the hind legs, a changed bark or voice, vomiting, coughing or gagging, and breathing difficulty can be compatible with paralysis-tick toxicity.

Do not let a prolonged search for the tick delay veterinary contact. If your dog is already showing signs, removing a tick does not remove the need for veterinary assessment because signs can continue to develop or worsen after removal.

1 · Location

Think coastal concentration, not a hard coastal boundary

Ixodes holocyclus, the Australian paralysis tick, is concentrated along eastern Australia's coastal region. That geographic pattern is useful for awareness, but it does not justify treating a fixed number of kilometres from the coastline as a safety boundary.

Practical interpretation

Use geography as one part of risk awareness. Do not assume that being farther inland automatically means paralysis ticks cannot occur there.

2 · Daily routine

Prevention does not replace the daily search

During paralysis-tick season, Australian regulatory guidance recommends daily searching for and removal of ticks even when a dog is using a registered product that claims control of Ixodes holocyclus.

Start with the head

The head deserves particular attention because Australian veterinary data identify it as the most frequent attachment region in dogs. Check the head carefully before continuing.

Continue across the whole dog

Do not stop after checking the head. Move systematically across the neck, chest, trunk, belly, limbs, paws and tail area so the search covers the whole animal.

Search deliberately through longer coats

Longer coat length has been associated with greater tick burden in an Australian survey of dogs with tick paralysis. Work section by section so you are checking at skin level rather than only looking across the coat surface.

Repeat the search every day during paralysis-tick season

Daily searching for and removal of ticks is recommended during paralysis-tick season even when a dog is using a registered product that claims control of Ixodes holocyclus.

The purpose of a systematic sequence is not to suggest that ticks occur only in particular places. The whole dog still needs to be checked.

3 · Timing

There is no useful “safe waiting window”

Do not wait for symptoms or for a particular number of days. Remove ticks when found, continue daily searches during paralysis-tick season, and contact a veterinarian promptly if compatible signs appear.

Paralysis-tick toxicity develops after sustained attachment rather than immediately. In one experimental study involving dogs carrying multiple paralysis ticks, clinical signs developed approximately 5.5 to 7 days after attachment.

The 5.5–7-day figure is context, not a deadline

It came from an experimental setting and does not establish a guaranteed symptom-free period for an individual dog. It should never be used to justify delaying tick removal or veterinary assessment when compatible signs are present.

4 · Coat context

Longer coats need a more deliberate search

Work through longer coats section by section and make sure the search reaches skin level rather than relying on a quick visual scan.

In an Australian survey of dogs with tick paralysis, longer coat length was associated with greater tick burden, while coat thickness was not associated with greater tick burden or tick size. This was an association, not evidence that long coat itself causes tick paralysis.

5 · Signs

Know the signs that change this from a search to a veterinary problem

Possible signs of paralysis-tick toxicity are not limited to a visible tick or one particular pattern of illness. Compatible signs include:

  • Weakness or wobbliness, particularly in the hind legs
  • A change in the bark or voice
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing or gagging
  • Breathing difficulty

Do not wait for every sign

Compatible weakness, voice change, vomiting, coughing or gagging, or breathing difficulty in a dog with possible paralysis-tick exposure warrants prompt veterinary attention. These signs are not a home diagnostic checklist.

6 · Prevention

Use prevention and keep searching

Use an appropriate registered preventive and still search your dog every day during paralysis-tick season. Prevention and physical searching are complementary layers of protection; one does not replace the other.

Continue daily physical tick searches. A preventive does not replace the recommended daily search-and-removal routine.

You find a tick and your dog is not showing compatible signs

Remove the tick and complete a careful whole-body search for additional ticks. Continue the daily search routine during paralysis-tick season and remain alert for compatible signs.

Your dog develops weakness, wobbliness, a changed voice, vomiting, coughing, gagging or breathing difficulty

Contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not allow a prolonged search for the tick to delay veterinary contact.

You removed a tick but your dog is already showing compatible signs

Veterinary assessment is still needed. Clinical signs can continue to develop or worsen after the tick has been removed.

Quick questions

Does being more than 20 km inland mean my dog is outside the risk area?

No fixed coastal distance should be treated as a hard safety boundary. Paralysis ticks are concentrated in eastern Australia's coastal region, but geographic risk is not defined by one simple kilometre cut-off.

Can a registered preventive replace daily tick checks?

Not during paralysis-tick season. Daily searching for and removal of ticks is still recommended even when a dog uses a registered product claiming control of Ixodes holocyclus.

Is 5.5 to 7 days the time I have before my dog becomes sick?

No. That interval came from an experimental study involving dogs carrying multiple ticks. It is useful biological context, not a safe waiting period for an individual dog.

Does a long coat cause tick paralysis?
