Everyday paw care

Paw cleaning, pad care and everyday protection

Routine paw care is mainly observation, gentle cleaning and matching protection to the actual exposure. Painful or damaged paws are a different decision from ordinary maintenance.

A simple routine is usually enough

Check the whole paw, not only the pad surface

Look at the main pads, between the toes, around the nails and anywhere debris can lodge. Small grass seeds, grit or other material can be easy to miss from above.

What to consider

Compare all paws and notice redness, swelling, unusual odour, persistent licking or sensitivity.

Clean gently after messy or irritating exposure

After mud, sand, salt or other debris, gentle rinsing with clean water and careful drying can be enough for routine cleaning.

What to consider

Avoid harsh household cleaners or unverified topical products on irritated skin.

Keep pads comfortable rather than trying to make them soft

Healthy pads are naturally tough. Cracking, raw areas, bleeding or persistent irritation should not simply be covered with a cosmetic product.

What to consider

If you use a paw product, check that it is intended for dogs and that the dog cannot be harmed by licking it.

Use protection for a defined exposure

Boots may help with heat, rough terrain or other specific environmental exposures, but fit matters. Protection that rubs, twists or changes gait can create a different problem.

What to consider

First ask whether changing the route, timing or surface can remove the exposure more directly.
